How to Hide Street Address from Google My Business

If you’re looking into basic SEO strategies for your startup or SME you can’t go past Google My Business. Listing your business here helps make it easier for people to find you and it’s FREE!  Every business should take advantage of this FREE listing especially with Google being the most popular search engine used by people all over the world today. According to Lifewire, Google now processes over 40,000 search queries every second and crawls 20 billion sites a day!

But what if you work from home and don’t want your home address available to the public, but you want the benefits of local Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). Google has you covered, they allow you to nominate geographical areas without having to reveal your actual street address, therefore you still get the benefit of local traffic. So how do you do it:

Create your Google My Business Profile

When going through this set up process put your home address into your profile details, we’ll go through how to hide it in the upcoming steps. Once you’ve verified your identity, your profile will be visible in searches and will look something like this:

Your business name, opening hours, phone number, website link and street address will be shown, along with any photos you’ve uploaded. In this image I’ve already gone ahead and hidden my street address and you can do the same.

Hide Your Street Address

In your profile, click on ‘Info’ in the left hand side menu which will bring up all your business details.

Next, click on the edit or pencil icon next to your address.

The address you entered when you set up your profile will automatically default here. If this is your home address and you don’t want it to be visible you can alter this. Select the option ‘Yes’ to tell Google that you deliver goods and services to customers at their location. Then you can specify particular areas by suburbs or postcodes that you operate or deliver in.

After you finish entering your suburbs you will notice there is a checkbox at the bottom. Leave this unticked to make your street address private.

Hit the ‘Apply’ button to finish your updates and your Google My Business listing will be updated with a map of your service areas only.

If you get stuck at all, I’m here to help!
